Open Prosthetics is currently the only effort of the Shared Design Alliance, a 501(c)3 educational non-profit. It was founded by the folks at Tackle Design, a small design firm in Durham, NC, after Jonathan Kuniholm, one of the partners, lost his arm in Iraq. The project was the brainchild of Kevin Webb, responding to the realization that we were not, in fact, likely to get rich solving all of the problems with prosthetic arms that didn't seem that hard (they were). Jesse Crossen, another Tackle partner, built the original site, and continued to work on it for some time.
The current relaunch is the realization of some of our desires for features missing from previous efforts, and is supported by Jonathan and Elizabeth Kuniholm. The redesign of the website has been funded by the Fetzer Institute.
